Rod Brooks (Warrington Road Club) is the latest addition to the 80/80 Register: below is his own description of his career and 80/80 ride. Note that at the age of 69 he recorded 3.59.05 for a 100 mile TT!

I Started cycling at 14 years of age on a 5 speed Claud Butler 14th birthday present. The Peak District and Cheshire were well within reach of my home in South Manchester. In 1961 a month prior to my 16th birthday I rode my first race a 25 mile TT held in Cheshire. Over the following years I progress onto bunched racing and time trials at distances up to 12 hours, with wins in both TT’s and road races. BBAR top 12 finisher 1968, 69 and 1976, 4 times Manchester and district BAR. 1985 saw racing put on hold for the next 10 years or so due to family and work commitments. Eventually I got on the bike again and gradually built up fitness level enabling me to enjoy some well known challenge “Raids” Pyrenees, Alps, Dolomites and Corsica.

I resumed racing in my 60s with some good results in the Veterans TT category up to reaching the age of 69, I retired on a high at the end of 2014 by establishing the VTTA age record for a 100 mile time trial in 3-59-05. I now enjoy cycling around the Cheshire lanes at a much more leisurely pace.

I found out about the 80 at 80 whilst browsing the Hounslow and District Wheelers website.

(great traditional club BTW) I’d been riding out into Cheshire at up to 60 miles or so but

saw the 80 at 80 would provide the incentive to push a bit further mileage wise whilst also enjoying some decent summer weather. And so on the 12th August 2025 I set off alone from my home in Stockport Cheshire on a hot and sunny morning bound for Nantwich, Cheshire via a winding lanes route avoiding ‘A’ roads as much as possible. Via Macclesfield, Goostrey, Byley, Middlewich, Church Minshull, Cholmondeston and destination Nantwich before following a much similar route back home. The whole daywas blessed with cloudless skies and sunny, although very hot weather.
